Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

An intriguing match-up between France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Belgium’s David Goffin is set to take place on Wednesday afternoon on the red clay in Monte Carlo. This is just the fourth time that these two players will cross paths on the ATP World Tour, with Tsonga leading the head-to-head series 2-1. Considering Goffin won their most recent meeting in Metz, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in their second round encounter on Wednesday.

The 11th seeded Tsonga reached the second round in Monte Carlo with a straight sets win against lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff on Tuesday. He dismissed all seven break points he faced during the encounter to close out the match 6-4,6-4 in one hour and 12 minutes.

Although Tsonga is coming off a lengthy spell on the sidelines with an arm injury, he has always performed well at this event. He has reached at least the quarter-finals in his past three showings on the clay in Monte-Carlo, including a final four appearance two years ago, when he lost to Rafael Nadal. He will likely expect a similar showing from himself, although he would not be faulted for some stumbles along the road to full recovery.

The Frenchman will come up against David Goffin, who got back Norbert Gombos in straight sets 6-1,6-4 to reach the second round of the tournament. He struck five aces, won 67% of his first service points and saved two break points to close out the match in one hour and 12 minutes.

This is set to be the fourth time that Tsonga and Goffin cross paths on the professional tour, with the Frenchman leading the head-to-head series 2-1. Goffin won their most recent encounter in Metz last season but that was during the Belgian’s surge to popularity during the 2014 season, and he is yet to show glimpses of that ability this season.

Prediction: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Three Sets
