Gael Monfils

Fellow countrymen Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon will meet for a seventh time on the professional tour, this time to determine who will advance to the fourth round of the 2015 Wimbledon Championships. The two have clashed once already this season in the final of the Marseille Open, which Simon won in three sets to lift the title. This will serve as their first ever meeting on grass. The Simon vs Monfils head to head stands at 5-1.

Seeded 12th at this year’s event, Gilles Simon reached the third round at the All England Club following a four set win against Blaz Kavcic on Thursday. Itappeared as though it was set to be a straightforward affair for the Frenchman before Blaz recovered to put on an impressive resilient third set to force a fourth set to the delight of the crowd in attendance. However, Simon grabbed a hold of the set early on and closed out the match with a double break to win 6-1, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-1.

Simon will next encounter Gael Monfils, who reached the third round following a straight sets win against another fellow countryman Adrian Mannarino. It was a standard Monfils match, as the No. 18 seed displayed his usual entertaining antics and jaw-dropping shotmaking abilities to close out the contest 7-6(5), 6-3, 7-5. He secured three break points and finished the match with 14 minutes left under the two-hour mark.

This marks the seventh time that these two competitors will clash on the professional tour, with Simon leading the head-to-head series 5-1. Simon won their only meeting on the tour this season, which took place in the Marseille final. He prevailed in the third and final set but will now meet Monfils for the first time on grass.
