Delbonis Shocks Murray

The Argentine hits 31 winners to score the upset

Federico Delbonis of Argentina notched the biggest win of his career Monday at the BNP Paribas Open. The 25-year-old Argentine knocked off a sluggish Andy Murray 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3).

Murray, the No. 2 seed, was playing in his second match since the Australian Open in January and in his first ATP World Tour event since becoming a father. But Delbonis cut him no slack, winning 70 per cent of his first-serve points and hitting 31 winners.

The Argentine’s biggest win prior had been a 2013 victory over then-No. 5 Roger Federer. Delbonis, No. 53 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, also improved to 3-5 lifetime against Top 10 opponents. He’ll next face either Gael Monfils of France or Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain.
