Stefanos Rising: Tsitsipas Into D.C. Semis

Greek to face winner of Zverev and Nishikori

Could this be the week that #NextGenATP Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas breaks through to win his first ATP World Tour title? So far, the 19-year-old is looking in great form in Washington, D.C.

Tsitsipas defeated 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up David Goffin 6-3, 6-4 on Friday to reach the Citi Open semi-finals, where he will face the winner of top seed Alexander Zverev and seventh seed Kei Nishikori.

The teenager has not dropped a set since saving two match points in his second-round victory against 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals qualifier Jared Donaldson. Against Goffin, Tsitsipas showed a confident aggression, taking the points to the World No. 11. The Belgian made an uncharacteristic number of unforced errors in his one-hour, 14-minute loss. The Greek saved all three break points he faced in the match, an impressive feat given that Goffin entered the week third on the ATP World Tour this season in return games won at 32 per cent, according to Infosys ATP Scores & Stats.

Tsitsipas’ rise continues, as he is projected to crack the Top 30 of the ATP Rankings for the first time on Monday, climbing to at least No. 27. If he wins his semi-final, the Athens-native will become the highest-ranked teenager, passing Canadian Denis Shapovalov. And if he captures his maiden tour-level title, Tsitsipas will move into the Top 20.

It’s a notable achievement, considering Tsitsipas began the 2018 season with just four tour-level wins. This week one year ago, he was World No. 164. Tsitsipas has yet to play Zverev or Nishikori.

Did You Know?
Tsitsipas is now 6-7 against Top 20 opponents this season. He will attempt to reach his second ATP World Tour final, after losing in the Barcelona championship match against Rafael Nadal.

Istomin To Meet Klizan In All-Qualifier Kitzbuhel Final

First all-qualifier championship match since 2015 Sydney

Denis Istomin will face fellow qualifier Martin Klizan in the first all-qualifier ATP World Tour final in three and a half years after beating Nicolas Jarry 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4 at the Generali Open on Friday.

Following in the footsteps of Viktor Troicki and Mikhail Kukushkin, who contested the first all-qualifier championship match at the 2015 Sydney International, Istomin edged Jarry in two hours and 36 minutes. The 31-year-old owns a 2-2 record in tour-level finals, winning his second ATP World Tour trophy in his most recent final appearance at the Chengdu Open in September 2017.

“I’m happy to be in the final and I am happy with my game,” said Istomin. “I think the altitude [in Kitzbuhel] is good for me as well, it helps with my serve and my groundstrokes… I feel good.”

Istomin, now 14-14 at tour-level in 2018, saved five of six break points and won 76 per cent of first-serve points against the Chilean, who was competing in his second tour-level semi-final in as many weeks. Jarry defeated top seed Dominic Thiem en route to the last four in Hamburg last week (l. to Basilashvili).

Istomin has defeated two seeded players in Austria this week, upsetting two-time champion Philipp Kohlschreiber and sixth seed Maximilian Marterer in successive matches. The World No. 95 had never previously reached a clay-court championship match at tour-level.

Klizan confirmed his place in the championship match alongside Istomin after one hour and 41 minutes, beating #NextGenATP Spaniard Jaume Munar 7-6(3), 6-3. The 29-year-old edged a tight first set before converting three of four break-point chances against the first-time tour-level semi-finalist to emerge victorious.

Klizan, who also reached the semi-finals in 2012, owns a 6-2 record in Kitzbuhel. The five-time tour-level titlist is tied at 1-1 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against Istomin, winning their most recent meeting en route to the 2014 BMW Open by FWU title.

“Anything can happen,” said Klizan. “It is a new match and Denis is a great player… It is going to be very important and there will be big pressure but I like to play under pressure. It is going to be a good match for the crowd as well. Denis is a very talented guy [and a] risky player. I am looking forward to playing the final.”

Did You Know?
Martin Klizan is undefeated in tour-level championship matches (5-0).

Murray Breaks Down In Tears After Reaching Washington QF

Murray Breaks Down In Tears After Reaching Washington QF

Scot will face Aussie De Minaur on Friday

How much does this all mean to Andy Murray?

The Scot fought for more than three hours against Marius Copil on Thursday, eventually beating the big-serving Romanian 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(4) at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. They finished at 3:01 a.m. local time, the latest finish ever at the Citi Open, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

After the match, though, Murray, who’s playing in only his third tournament since the 2017 Wimbledon, showed how much he’s missed the sport. The Scot became overwhelmed with emotions, at first dabbing away tears after embracing Copil at the net.

But then Murray, sitting by himself on his bench, sobbed for minutes into his towel. The dozens of remaining fans cheered and clapped for the Scot, who is back to fighting for every point and loving every moment of it.

“Just the emotions coming at the end of an extremely long day and a long match,” Murray said.

The former World No. 1, who underwent hip surgery on 8 January, will next meet Australia’s #NextGenATP star Alex de Minaur, who beat 2017 Next Gen ATP Finals champion Hyeon Chung 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

De Minaur had to do double duty on Thursday, finishing off American Steve Johnson before facing Chung. But Murray’s match takes tournament bragging rights. The previous latest end time in Washington, D.C., was 2:27 a.m.

Murray certainly had to want it against Copil, who made him work for the quarter-final berth. The big-serving Romanian was the more aggressive player in the opener, taking early leads in Murray’s service games and seeing four break points.

But Murray erased them all and led 5/0 in the tie-break before Copil climbed back into it, hitting a drop volley winner on set point. Murray, however, showed no hangover. He broke in the first game and cut down on his mistakes, slicing his unforced error count almost in half and forcing a decider.

The two traded breaks halfway through the final set before reaching another tie-break, where Murray grew more vocal by the point until Copil sliced a backhand into the net.

Washington Open: Andy Murray beats Marius Copil to reach quarter-finals

Britain’s former world number one Andy Murray broke down in tears after coming from a set down to beat Romanian Marius Copil and reach the last eight of the Washington Open.

The 31-year-old won 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 7-6 (7-4) in a match that finished at 03:02 local time.

Murray will play Alex de Minaur of Australia in the quarter-finals – his first since Wimbledon in 2017.

He is playing only his third tournament since hip surgery in January.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray – now ranked 832 in the world – lost the first set in one hour and six minutes, having taken a 5-0 lead in the tie-break before losing seven points in a row.

He broke Copil twice in the second set to take it in 45 minutes and looked set to take the third comfortably when he secured a break in the sixth game to move 4-2 up.

But the Romanian immediately broke back before holding serve to level the match, before Murray’s fitness prevailed in the deciding tie-break.

The tournament’s previous latest finish was 02:27 local time.

'Fighting back the tears' – Alex wins battle of Zverevs in Washington

  • Posted: Aug 03, 2018

Mischa Zverev said he had to “fight back tears” prior to his third-round defeat by younger brother and world number three Alexander Zverev at the Washington Open.

Defending champion Alexander, 21, won 6-3 7-5 in what was the first ATP Tour meeting between the German siblings.

They had previously met on two occasions: the last at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in 2014.

“I needed a few seconds to actually bite my tongue and focus,” said Mischa.

“It was very emotional for me. It was just a great day.”

Alexander will play Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals after the Japanese seventh seed defeated Canada’s Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (7-1) 6-3.

Speaking about his victory over his brother, Alexander said: “We played near our best. It was unbelievable.

“I just hope it happens again and I hope it happens at later stages of bigger tournaments. I hope we meet again someday in a final.”

Later on Thursday, the brothers teamed up to complete their rain-delayed first-round doubles match, in which they defeated top seeds Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic 6-1 6-4.
