Third seed Kei Nishikori kicked off his summer hard court campaign in style on Wednesday at the Rogers Cup, moving into the third round with a win over qualifier Dennis Novikov, 6-4, 7-5.

“I thought it was a good match, good enough for the first match since Wimbledon,” said Nishikori. “I knew I was going to get ups-and-downs because I haven’t played matches in a long time and I didn’t practise much the first couple of weeks after getting injured…but it was still a good, solid match today.”

Nishikori dropped just five points in racing out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set, but Novikov fought back to level the set at 4-4. Just when it appeared the American might be on his way to an improbable comeback, Nishikori responded by breaking his opponent to lead 5-4 and then serving out the set.

Novikov continued to hang tough with his opponent, forcing Nishikori to serve to stay in the set at 4-5. But the third seed saved his best tennis for the end by breaking his opponent once more to lead 6-5 and then closing out the contest.

Next up for Nishikori is Rajeev Ram, who upset No. 13 seed Lucas Pouille, 6-4, 7-6(4). The American squandered two match points on his serve at 5-4 and couldn’t serve out the match again at 6-5, but made good in the tie-break on his fourth match point opportunity. 

Nishikori leads his FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry with Ram 3-1, with all three wins coming on hard courts.

Kevin Anderson also moved into the third round after No. 6 seed Dominic Thiem was forced to retire due to a hip injury with Anderson leading 4-1 in the first set.

Now that the first round of play is complete, an action-packed Day 3 on Wednesday at the Rogers Cup features 14 singles matches with a stellar lineup that includes World No. 1 Novak Djokovic as well as No. 4 seed and top Canadian Milos Raonic, who is playing his first match since reaching the Wimbledon final on July 10.

Three-time champion Djokovic will face Gilles Muller in the second match on Centre Court. Djokovic begins his quest to win his 30th ATP Masters 1000 title. In the last five years, Djokovic has won 18 of 21 Rogers Cup matches, with his losses in the 2013 SF (l. to Nadal in a third-set TB), 2014 3R (l. to eventual champ Tsonga) and final last year (l. to Murray). Overall, Djokovic has advanced to the quarterfinals or better eight of nine years in Canada.

Of the six Canadians who began in the draw, five still remain standing. Raonic, after a 1R bye, leads the pack as he faces off in the night match against Yen-Hsun Lu. Fellow Canadians Dennis Shapovalov, Vasek Pospisil, Peter Polansky and Steven Diez also take the court for second-round action, all with tough opponents. The No. 370-ranked Shapovalov takes on Grigor Dimitrov, Pospisil plays No. 10 seed Gael Monfils, and Diez meets No. 12 seed Bernard Tomic.

There are also two all-American clashes with John Isner and Ryan Harrison, as well as Donald Young and Jack Sock. It’s been a strong showing for Americans in Toronto, as eight of the 12 who began in the first round have advanced, marking the most at the Rogers Cup since 1999. Other Americans on the line-up for Wednesday include qualifiers Jared Donaldson, who will face Fabio Fognini, and Dennis Novikov, who kicks off play on Centre Court against No. 3 seed Kei Nishikori.

Rising star and No. 6 seed Dominic Thiem is also set to play against the big-serving Kevin Anderson. The 22-year-old Austrian enters the Rogers Cup with four ATP World Tour titles and a 48-14 match record on the season (16-5 on hard). He leads the ATP World Tour in overall match wins and clay match wins (25) and is second in titles. He is the youngest player in the Top 10 Emirates ATP Rankings at No. 9, and broke into the Top 10 on June 6 at No. 7 (from 15) after his semi-final run at Roland Garros (l. to Djokovic).

Stan Wawrinka got his Rogers Cup campaign off to a successful start on Tuesday, advancing to the third round with a 7-6(3), 7-6(8) win over Mikhail Youzhny. The pair traded breaks in the first set and, in the eventual tie-break, Wawrinka sealed the opener on his first set point opportunity with a backhand winner. Youzhny regrouped and raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but the Swiss broke back in the fifth game for 2-3. Again in a tie-break, the second seed sealed victory on his third match point after two hours.

The 31-year-old Swiss, who hit 31 winners, next faces either No. 16 seed Jack Sock or Donald Young in the third round. A three-time titlist this year (Chennai, Dubai, Geneva), Wawrinka is making his tenth appearance at the Rogers Cup. His best result was a quarter-final showing in 2011 (l. to Fish).

Young set a second-round clash with Sock after prevailing in his opener against Alexandr Dolgopolov, 7-6(6), 6-4. Nothing separated the players in the first set, with both holding serve all the way through and winning 50 points each, but it was Young who managed to convert on his second set point in the tie-break at 7/6. The American then rallied from 1-4 down in the second set to take the match. 

Earlier, Lucas Pouille was two points away from losing against qualifier Emilio Gomez, but the No. 13 seed rallied to win their opening round match, 6-7(8), 6-4, 7-5. Gomez, the son of 1990 Roland Garros champion Andres Gomez, saved a set point serving at 5-6 in the opening set and another down 6/7 in the tie-break before converting on his second set point. Pouille grabbed the lone break of serve in the second set to lead 4-3 and held the slight edge to force a deciding set.

The Frenchman served to stay in the match at 4-5, then broke Gomez in the next game before closing out the contest on his serve. The victory gave Pouille his first ATP World Tour main draw win in Canada. Next up for him in the second-round is Rajeev Ram, who won 90 per cent of his first serve points to advance earlier in the day over Ernests Gulbis, 6-4, 6-2. 

Qualifier Dennis Novikov recorded his first main draw win at an ATP World Tour event by moving past Federico Delbonis, 6-4, 6-3. Novikov, ranked No. 131 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, converted on the lone break point chances he had in each set while saving both break points against him in the match. The American will now square off against a Top 10 player for the first time when he takes on No. 3 seed Kei Nishikori in the next round.

In-form Croatian Ivo Karlovic fought back in three sets to beat NextGen player Taylor Fritz 6-7(9), 7-6(5), 6-2, and set up a second-round meeting with his countryman, eighth seed Marin Cilic. Karlovic, who reached the final in Washington last week and won the title in Newport the week before, broke twice in the deciding set before serving it out after two hours and 17 minutes. He finished with 29 aces.

Gael Monfils opened up his Rogers Cup campaign in style on Tuesday, scoring a convincing opening-round win over Joao Sousa, 6-3, 6-3.

“I think I’ve put in good work with my team. What I try to do is keep working with them and then see the results later,” said Monfils. “I like to think when I’m in my top game and with consistency, I can beat a lot of players at the top.”

Monfils won 50 per cent of his return points (compared to 38 per cent for Sousa) and fired eight aces. The Frenchman is on a six-match win streak after prevailing last week at the Citi Open.

Next up for Monfils is the winner of the match between Vasek Pospisil and Jeremy Chardy. Monfils leads his FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry with Pospisil by 2-0 and with Chardy by 2-1, but Chardy won their most recent match last month in the opening round at Wimbledon.

Yen-Hsun Lu continued his outstanding 2016 with a first-round win over #NextGen star Alexander Zverev on Tuesday at the Rogers Cup, 7-5, 6-2.

Zverev went up a break in the opening set to lead 4-3, but Lu responded by breaking his opponent in the next game and then again at 6-5 to grab a one-set lead.

After being sidelined for six months due to elbow surgery, Lu returned to action in May and produced outstanding results on the ATP Challenger Tour. He won two-grass court titles (Ilkley, Surbiton) and finished as runner-up in two other events (Manchester, Seoul), all in less than two months.

Next up for Lu is fourth seed and home favourite Milos Raonic. The Canadian leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head rivalry 2-0, but the haven’t played in over two years.

“If a 10,000 [person] crowd is against you, even if you prepare for it, it’s still a shock,” said Lu about his upcoming match against Raonic. “I will be a little bit nervous, but I respect him. I’m happy for him. I hope I can play my best tennis and try to enjoy the 10,000 people against me!”

John Millman moved into the second-round after Jared Donaldson was forced to stop play during their match on Tuesday at the Rogers Cup, 6-4, 4-3, retired. Millman has climbed 25 spots this year in the Emirates ATP Rankings to his current standing of No. 67.

Next up for him is the winner of the match between No. 15 seed Steve Johnson and Fabio Fognini. The Aussie has never played Fognini, but Johnson leads their FedEx ATPHead2Head rivalry 3-0, with all three wins coming in 2016.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic partnered with fellow Serbian Nenad Zimonjic in doubles at the Rogers Cup. The duo began their bid on Tuesday in Toronto, but fell to home favourites Philip Bester and Adil Shamasdin. The Canadians won 7-5, 4-6, 10-2.

”It’s an exciting match-up, kind of like a popcorn match,” said Bester. “At the end of the day, I was also excited to go out there with Adil and I knew that we had enough skill and enough game to beat these guys. That’s what happened today, so I couldn’t be happier.”

“I thought we served really smart and tried to keep it away from their strengths,” added Shamasdin. “Going into a match like this we are focused on what we are doing on our end, and we are not really kind of worried about what they’re going to do.”

Bester/Shamasdin saved seven of the eight break points they faced to beat Djokovic/Zimonjic in 82 minutes and reach the second round. They next face seventh seeds Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram.

Third seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo will open their campaign in Toronto against Croat tandem Marin Cilic and Marin Draganja, who fired six aces and saved the one break point they faced to beat Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 6-4. 

John Isner and NextGen star Alexander Zverev defeated Robert Lindstedt and Sam Querrey 7-6(4), 6-3 to set a second-round meeting with fifth seeds Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau. Nick Kyrgios and Jack Sock beat Gilles Muller and Benoit Paire 6-4, 6-2 in 53 minutes to set a second-round clash with sixth seeds Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil.

Australian-Serbian duo Bernard Tomic and Viktor Troicki had few difficulties seeing off the Canadian wild card pairing of Felix Auger Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov. Tomic and Troicki won 89 per cent of first-serve points and were never broken. They next meet No. 2 seed Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares.
