Rio 2016: Andy Murray and Johanna Konta in Team GB Olympics squad

  • Posted: Jun 10, 2016

British number ones Andy Murray and Johanna Konta have been named in Team GB’s tennis squad for the Rio Olympics.

They are joined by Heather Watson, 24, and Murray’s older brother Jamie, 30, in the four-strong team.

Andy Murray, 29, claimed gold in the men’s singles and silver in the mixed doubles at London 2012.

Konta, 25, will be playing in her first Games, but it will be a second appearance for Watson and a third for Jamie Murray.

  • Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s full team for Rio

World number 18 Konta said: “It’s such an honour to have the rare opportunity to represent my country in an Olympic Games. I’m looking forward to doing my part for Team GB and supporting my team-mates across all the sports.”

Former Wimbledon champion Murray added: “Playing for Team GB during London 2012 gave me some of the best memories I have in sport.

“Being a home Olympic Games, it was such a special occasion and the atmosphere at Wimbledon was like nothing I have ever experienced.

“Winning medals for your country is as good as it gets and I can’t wait to get to Rio to try and win more medals.”

Wawrinka Adds Krajicek To Team For Grass Swing

Swiss to work with Krajicek over the next four weeks

World No. 5 Stan Wawrinka has bolstered his coaching team for the grass-court swing by adding 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek.

Krajicek, who is the tournament director of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, will join Wawrinka’s regular coach, former World No. 2 Magnus Norman, and Yannick Fattebert over the next four weeks.

“As I’m always looking to improve on court, I would like to take this opportunity to announce that I have added Richard Krajicek to my existing coaching staff to help during the grass court season for the next four weeks,” Wawrinka wrote on his Twitter feed.

“Magnus, Yannick and I are really excited about the new addition to our team – adding a former Wimbledon Champion can only further my knowledge and understanding of the grass. It’s a real privilege and honour to add such a champion to my corner.”

The 31-year-old Swiss will compete at next week’s Aegon Championships in London.

Wawrinka has reached the quarter-finals at The Championships, Wimbledon, for the past two years. In 2014 he lost to his Swiss compatriot Roger Federer and last year he fell to Richard Gasquet.

Stan Wawrinka teams up with former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek

  • Posted: Jun 10, 2016

Stan Wawrinka has turned to former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek to further his “knowledge and understanding of the grass”.

In 11 appearances at Wimbledon, two-time Grand Slam champion Wawrinka has never reached the semi-finals, losing in the last eight in 2014 and 2015.

Krajicek, now 44, won the men’s singles title there in 1996, becoming the first Dutch player to do so.

He will join 31-year-old Wawrinka for the next four weeks.

Wawrinka, who considers clay his best surface, added: “It’s a real privilege and honour to add such a champion to my corner.”

The Swiss world number five has won both the Australian Open and French Open, also reaching the US Open semi-finals twice.

Skupski Brothers Reveal Day In The Life In Challengers

The British doubles specialists are the top seeds at this week’s ATP Challenger Tour event in Surbiton

Ken Skupski and Neal Skupski are a stalwart doubles pairing, with the brothers recording 10 ATP Challenger Tour titles as a duo. Competing this week in front of a home crowd in Surbiton, England, the top seeds and defending champions give us an inside look at a day in the life at an ATP Challenger Tour event. Neal chronicles their Thursday for us from start to finish:

7:45am: The alarm goes off and I get straight up. Ken is used to being awake before the alarm goes off because he’s got two kids at home (he’s an early person). We eat a protein breakfast to start the day: Oatmeal and eggs and a coffee to wake up!

9:34am: We leave the National Tennis Centre, where we’re staying, and make our way to Surbiton for our morning practice.

10:10am: We pass time while the grass dries from overnight rain. Dustin Brown is in an intense game of Sequence on the next table!

10:56am: The wait continues. No play before 1:00pm.

12:18pm: Adil Shamasdin, Ken and Jonathan Marray warm up for practice on the bikes to get the heart rate up.

1:38pm: We warm up for our match – a lot of work around the net to be sharp from the first point.

2:00pm: No play before 3:45pm, so we head to the National Tennis Centre to practise and eat. Ken had a chicken salad and I had a baked potato with tuna, plus water and energy drinks for hydration.

3:53pm: The waiting game continues! I’m catching up with all the latest England news before Euro 2016 starts on Friday. I’m thinking England will make the semi-final, but the winners will be Spain. Ken thinks England in the quarter-finals and the winners will be Germany.

5:15pm: We’re warming up for our quarter-final match against Luke Bambridge and Joe Salisbury. Started on the treadmill for five minutes, five minutes of plyometric, five minutes of hand-eye coordination drills and then bands for shoulder maintenance.

7:15pm: Won our match 6-4, 7-6(5) against Bambridge/Salisbury!

7:30pm: Time to cool down and stretch after the match – five minutes of biking then 10 minutes of stretching.

8:00pm: A repeat of last week’s final in Manchester is still possible with good friends Purav Raja and Divij Sharan, but there are still a few matches to go! Semi-finals tomorrow.

8:12pm: Dinner at Nandos, one of our favourite places to eat along with Chipotle and Wagamama. Tonight we plan to watch some television, FaceTime the family and chat football with Raja and John Millman on a WhatsApp group. We are all mad Liverpool Football Club fans!

10:30pm: Bedtime after an episode of “Love Island” on television. Good night, everyone! See you tomorrow in Surbiton.

Bryan Brothers Roll On In Stuttgart

Top seeds into semi-finals

Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan beat Sam Groth and Robert Lindstedt 6-4, 7-6(3) to move into the semi-finals of the Mercedes Cup on Thursday. The top seeds dropped only six points on serve and have yet to be broken in their first trip to Stuttgart. The Americans are aiming for a record 113rd tour-level title as a team. Their semi-final opponents will be Oliver Marach and Fabrice Martin, who upset third seeds John Peers and Bruno Soares 7-5, 6-4 in 75 minutes.

Second seeds Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau downed Florian Mayer and Philipp Oswald 6-3, 6-4 in just over an hour to secure a spot in the semi-finals. The Romanians broke serve three times and closed out the win in 63 minutes.

Top Seeds Bounced In ‘s-Hertogenbosch

Gilles Muller teamed with Frederik Nielsen to upset top seeds Rohan Bopanna and Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 7-5 for a place in the semi-finals. It was the second match of the day for Muller, who is also still in singles contention. Top Seed Ferrer Advances In ‘s-Hertogenbosch

Two-time champion makes winning start

Top seed David Ferrer saved 10 of 13 break points faced in defeating Israel’s Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of the Ricoh Open on Thursday. The 2008 and 2012 champion at the ATP World Tour 250 grass-court tournament raced to a 4-0 lead in the second set, then hung on to serve out the win on his third match point. The return of serve was the weapon of choice for both players, who traded eight breaks of serve and just two aces.

“I have very good memories here, having won twice… I thought it was a good way to start my grass season,” Ferrer told Tennis.nl. “I am trying to break back into the Top 10. There are many good players out there like David Goffin, Dominic Thiem and Nick Kyrgios. I know that I am 34 years old, but I still enjoy playing tennis and I hope to have a good grass-court season.”

Facing the Spaniard in the quarter-finals will be Gilles Muller, who struck 13 aces in dismissing Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5, 6-1. The left-hander from Luxembourg saved both break points faced and avenged his grass-court loss against Garcia-Lopez at Queen’s in 2009. The pair’s FedEx ATP Head2Head series is now tied at two.

Third seed Ivo Karlovic defeated Dutch wild card Igor Sijsling 7-6(4), 7-6(5) to advance. The 6’11” Croatian’s favourite shot was working well, as he landed 70 per cent of first serves and fired 20 aces in the 84-minute win.

The 28-year-old Sijsling, No. 118 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, lost the match despite never facing break point. He battled to 4-4 in the first-set tie-break before seeing his opponent sweep the next three points. In the second set, he earned the lone break point of the match on Karlovic’s serve at 2-2, but could not convert. The more experienced Karlovic, aged 37 and currently No. 28 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, went up 6-3 in the second-set tie-break and closed out his fifth win of the year on his third match point.

Up next for the towering Karlovic is Adrian Mannarino, who beat qualifier Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-2 in under an hour. The Frenchman, who stands a full foot shorter than Karlovic, used guile rather than power to prevail. He lost just three first-serve points and did not face a break point.

Roger Federer wins on return from injury in Stuttgart

  • Posted: Jun 09, 2016

World number three Roger Federer made his return from injury with a second-round victory in the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart.

The 34-year-old had missed the French Open last month with a back problem.

His comeback match against American Taylor Fritz went into a second day because of heavy rain, but the Swiss eventually came through 6-4 5-7 6-4.

The result takes Federer joint second with Ivan Lendl for the most wins in the open era with 1,071.

“I can take a lot of confidence out of this match,” said the 17-time Grand Slam champion.

“I need to improve a few things, but I served big and I was able to handle three sets over two days, and find some energy at the end of the match.”

Nadal To Miss Wimbledon

Two-time champion afflicted by left wrist injury

Two-time champion Rafael Nadal has announced that he will not play at this year’s Championships at Wimbledon. Two weeks ago, the 30-year-old Spaniard cut short his bid for a 10th Roland Garros title as he withdrew prior to his third-round match with a left wrist injury.

“I’m sad to announce that after talking to my doctors, and receiving the results of my last medical revision, I won’t be able to play at Wimbledon this year,” Nadal said via Facebook. “As you can all imagine, it’s a very tough decision, but the injury I suffered at Roland Garros needs time to heal… Thank you all for your support, especially my fans. Your kind messages mean so much to me.”

Nadal won the Wimbledon title in consecutive tournament appearances in 2008 (d. Federer) and ’10 (d. Berdych), after sitting out the tournament in 2009 due to knee tendonitis. Last year, he lost to Dustin Brown 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.

Johanna Konta: British number one loses at Nottingham Open but Tara Moore through

  • Posted: Jun 09, 2016

Johanna Konta exited the Nottingham Open in the second round to leave qualifier Tara Moore as the only British player in the competition.

British number one Konta suffered a straight-sets defeat by Zheng Saisai.

Konta, ranked 18 in the world, lost 6-4 7-5 to the Chinese, who is 44 places below her in the world rankings.

Zheng will now face Hong Kong-born Moore, 23, who beat American world number 67 Christina McHale 6-2 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals.

Konta needed a medical time out three games into the second set for a “niggle” on her pelvis.

But following the match, the 25-year-old said she expected to play in the Wimbledon warm-up events in Birmingham and Eastbourne.

The 25-year-old was below the form which helped her become the first British woman since 1983 to break into the top 20, making four double faults and winning just 38% of points on her second serve.

British number two Heather Watson and compatriot Laura Robson were knocked out in the first round.
