  • Posted: Sep 20, 2016

Andy Murray blamed his mum for having taught him his bad habit when asked what she thought about his swearing on court.

The world number two was being interviewed by Julia and Melissa during a Davis Cup trophy tour event at Stirling University.

Among the questions, Murray was asked what was the naughtiest thing he did as a kid, what was his favourite holiday when he was young and who was his inspiration when he was 11.

Andy Murray: Time to capitalise on tennis success with more Scottish facilities

  • Posted: Sep 20, 2016

Andy Murray says he wants Tennis Scotland to deliver on plans to build 10 new indoor facilities in the next five years.

The governing body aims to develop a lasting legacy from the success of Andy and brother Jamie.

Chairman Blane Dodds is to submit proposals to funding partners in a bid to realise the project.

“It’s important to capitalise on the momentum we have just now in British tennis,” Murray told BBC Scotland.

“There’s a lot of positive stuff going on.

“We haven’t been in this position for a very long time, so it’s a good opportunity to try to inspire some kids and get more of them into the sport.”

Andy, 29, ranked second in the world, won his third Grand Slam title this year at Wimbledon and made it back-to-back Olympic golds, while Jamie, 30, is fourth in the doubles rankings, also with three majors to his name.

On the plans for more indoor facilities, Murray added: “While we are still playing and still visible, it’s probably a good time.

“Me and Jamie won’t be playing forever. I’ve maybe got three or four more years at the top level. Maybe Jamie, at doubles, can go on a bit longer.

“The more facilities the better. The weather in Scotland isn’t great and it can be expensive to play indoors. Hopefully, they follow through on that promise.”

Davis Cup creates new fans

The Murray brothers led Great Britain to Davis Cup glory in 2015, ending a 79-year wait for a 10th title.

The defence ended with a 3-2 semi-final defeat to Argentina in Glasgow at the weekend, with the siblings continuing their unbeaten record in doubles.

“It’s an unbelievably hard competition to win,” said Murray, who was troubled by a thigh strain in Sunday’s singles win over Guido Pella.

“Argentina, who are in the final now, are trying to win for the first time and they’ve had great players for a very long time.

“I think it has brought more fans into tennis. When we are playing as a team and playing for your country, the players and fans are passionate.

“The atmosphere at the ties is incredible and people enjoy that. It’s something different from week-to-week tour life.”

Murray, who played on each day against Argentina, including a marathon singles loss to Juan Martin Del Potro, will go ahead with a charity exhibition match in Glasgow on Wednesday but stressed that he is in need of a break after a punishing schedule.

Prior to his surprise quarter-final defeat against Kei Nishikori at the US Open, he had a run of reaching seven consecutive finals, winning the Rome Masters, Queen’s, Wimbledon and the Olympic singles.

Murray is due to play in Beijing, Shanghai and Vienna before ending the season with the Paris Masters and the ATP World Tour Finals in London but may now alter those plans.

Benneteau Scores Upset On Day One In Metz

Muller also advances on Monday

Julien Benneteau scored his sixth singles win of the season on Monday with an upset against fifth seed Martin Klizan to kick off the 14th Moselle Open in Metz, France. Benneteau beat the left-handed Slovakian 6-2, 6-1 in 56 minutes to move into the second round in his home country.

The 34-year-old has posted a 13-9 doubles record this season but has limited his singles matches since undergoing abductor surgery on 9 June 2015. Benneteau, ranked No. 238 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, needed a wild card to get into the Moselle Open.

But he seems to have hit his stride in recent months. Benneteau reached the quarter-finals in Abierto Mexicano Mifel and the second round at the Western & Southern Open, which included a first-round win over David Ferrer. The Bourg-en-Bresse native will play countryman Paul-Henri Mathieu or German Dustin Brown in the second round.

Sixth seed Gilles Muller advanced past Argentine Horacio Zeballos 7-6(5), 7-5. Muller recorded 19 aces and won 87 per cent of his first-serve points (39/45). The left-handed Luxembourg native will face a qualifier in the second round, either Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili or Frenchman Gregoire Barrere.

In doubles main draw action, No. 2 seeds Oliver Marach and Fabrice Martin beat Chris Guccione and Andre Sa 6-4 7-5. Fourth seeds Robert Lindstedt and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi beat French wild cards Barrere and Albano Olivetti 6-3, 6-7(7), 10-7.

Zverev Takes #NextGen Battle In St. Petersburg

German advances past home favourite to start indoor tournament

In a battle of #NextGen players, German Alexander Zverev earned the better of home favourite Karen Khachanov at the St. Petersburg Open on Monday, day one of the indoor ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Russia.

Fifth seed Zverev moved into the second round with a 7-6(3), 6-4 win against the 20-year-old Khachanov. Zverev won 71 per cent of his service points and saved one of two break points faced. Khachanov, a wild card entry, erased the lone break point he faced during the first set, but was broken twice during the second set.

The Moscow native had won four of his five previous matches after qualifying and reaching the second round of the US Open. The 6’6” right-hander beat Italian Thomas Fabbiano during his Grand Slam tournament debut.

Zverev, the 2015 ATP Star Of Tomorrow presented by Emirates, reached his first two ATP World Tour finals at Nice in May and Halle in June. But the 19-year-old Hamburg native had lost four of his past five matches, including a second-round defeat to Brit Daniel Evans at the US Open. Zverev will next face another Russian in the second round: 20-year-old qualifier Daniil Medvedev or 19-year-old wild card Alexander Bublik.

Top seed Stan Wawrinka will make his St. Petersburg Open debut against Lukas Rosol after the Czech prevailed past Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 6-4. Wawrinka leads their FedEx ATP Head2Head series 5-0, including a straight-sets win on hard courts earlier this year at the Australian Open. The Swiss is fresh off his third Grand Slam tournament title at the US Open in New York.

In the other singles main draw match of the day, Ricardas Berankis of Lithuania prevailed past Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and six minutes. Berankis, No. 83 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, will face fourth seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in the second round. Their FedEx ATP Head2Head series is tied at 1-all, with Bautista Agut having won their last contest in 2014 in Moscow.

Lu Returns To Home Soil In Kaohsiung

Lu Returns To Home Soil In Kaohsiung

Taiwanese star looks for third ATP Challenger Tour title of 2016

After an outstanding run of form earlier this year on the ATP Challenger Tour, Yen-Hsun Lu is looking to pick up where he left off as he returns to home soil.

The 33 year old is the second seed at this week‘s $125,000 Challenger in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Lu will play Ze Zhang of China in his opening match, which he admitted might bring up some uncomfortable emotions.

“I am close to most of the players from Chinese Taipei and mainland China. It’s quite often that we play against each other in Challenger events,” said Lu. “It‘s never easy to play with friends, because you can’t express all your feelings on court like you would against others and we’re all too familiar with each other.”

Lu was sidelined for six months due to an ongoing elbow problem that he eventually underwent surgery for this January in Australia. He returned to the ATP Challenger Tour in May at the $100,000 event in Seoul, Korea, and immediately began producing big results.

The veteran posted a 20-3 record in five Challenger events, winning on the English grass courts of Ilkley and Surbiton, and finishing runner-up at the grass-court Challenger in Manchester. Lu also posted a runner-up showing in Seoul.

“I think the results tell the whole story,” said Lu. “I am very happy with my performance in the past few months. It shows that I can still compete with Top 50 and even Top 30 players. Most importantly, I don‘t feel any pain in my hand now. I am completely healthy and can give everything during matches and training.”

He‘s hoping to draw from recent success in Asia and inspire himself for another big week in Kaohsiung. Lu excelled in China at the end of last year, winning the $125,000 ATP Challenger Tour in Ningbo and posting a quarter-final showing at the China Open.

As one of the most successful players from Asia, Lu often finds himself being asked for advice by many of the rising stars on the ATP Challenger Tour. Having once been in their position himself, it‘s a role that he takes pride in.

“I would say it‘s important to take these Challenger events seriously. You need to give all of yourself to try and score a win because this is the only way to improve,” said Lu. “If you can remain consistent, you‘ll have a chance to show your best tennis on the ATP World Tour.”
