Johanna Konta reached the third round of the women’s singles at the Olympics, but fellow Britons Heather Watson and Kyle Edmund were eliminated in Rio.

World number 13 Konta beat France’s Caroline Garcia 6-2 6-3.

Watson, ranked 66th, struggled against world number 20 Elina Svitolina with the Ukrainian winning 6-3 1-6 6-3.

The two Britons will team up in the women’s doubles later on Monday when they face third seeds Hao-Ching Chan and Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei.

“I’m grateful to be here and I get to say I’m an Olympian,” Konta, 25, told BBC Radio 5 live.

“I’m here to compete and I’m really enjoying being part of the whole thing.”

Disappointment for Edmund

Britain’s Kyle Edmund went out of the men’s singles with a 6-4 7-5 defeat by Japan’s Taro Daniel.

Daniel, ranked 117 in the world, trailed 0-3 in the first set and 2-5 in the second but recovered to progress to a third-round encounter with Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro or Brazilian Joao Sousa.

“I know what I could have done better,” Edmund said. “I just wasn’t able to quite do it on the court and problem-solve during the match. I am disappointed at the minute but it isn’t the end of the world.”

Berdych Adds Ivanisevic To Coaching Team

World No. 8 joins forces with popular Croat

Tomas Berdych revealed on Monday that he will begin to work with Goran Ivanisevic at next week’s Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

“I am delighted to announce a new addition to my team,” Berdych wrote on his official Twitter account. “Two months ago, I started working with Luka Kutanjac and I feel that, since then, my game has [improved] and my form has been going in the right direction. In order to further improve, I have decided to add Goran Ivanisevic to the team already in Cincinnati.

“I feel that Goran, with his playing and coaching experience, as well as his energy, is a perfect addition to the team. [I’m] feeling excited about new challenges.”

Ivanisevic parted company with fellow Croatian Marin Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, on 21 June after a three-year partnership. Former World No. 2 Ivanisevic, one of the biggest servers of the Open Era, captured the 2001 Wimbledon title as a wild card entry.

Berdych, 30, is currently No. 8 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. He has a 12-17 record in tour-level finals.

Top seed Novak Djokovic was beaten in the first round of the Olympic men’s singles by Juan Martin Del Potro.

The Serb, who lost to Del Potro in the bronze medal play-off at London 2012, was again overpowered by the Argentine, who won 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-2).

The world number one, 29, was in tears as he left the court after the two-and-a-half hours match.

“This is one of the toughest losses in my career,” said Djokovic, who was chasing a first Olympic title.

Djokovic became the first man for 47 years to hold all four Grand Slam titles after winning the French Open in June.

He suffered a shock third-round loss to American Sam Querrey at Wimbledon but bounced back by winning his 30th Masters title in Toronto last week.

“It’s not easy to handle, especially now, just after the wounds are still fresh,” he added after failing to improve on the bronze he won at the 2008 Olympics.

“But you have to deal with it. It’s not the first or the last time that I have lost a tennis match. But the Olympic Games, yeah, it’s completely different.”

Del Potro will face Portugal’s Joao Sousa in the second round on Monday.

The 27-year-old, a former US Open winner, has dropped to 141st in the world after two years of injury problems but did not face a single break point on his serve against the 12-time Grand Slam champion.

“It was a wonderful evening from the beginning,” said Del Potro.

“After all the effort I’ve put in to get back to playing tennis, I’ve defeated the number one. It was a dream night.”

Argentines Clinch Atlanta Doubles Title

Andres Molteni and Horacio Zeballos prevail

The all-Argentine tandem of Andres Molteni and Horacio Zeballos kicked off their partnership in style, notching the BB&T Atlanta Open title in their first tournament together.

Molteni and Zeballos defeated the all-Swedish duo of Johan Brunstrom and Andreas Siljestrom 7-6(2), 6-4, dodging rain drops on a stormy Sunday to prevail after one hour and 33 minutes. They earn 250 Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings points and split $33,400 in prize money.

“It was a great week in both singles and doubles,” said Zeballos, who also reached the singles quarter-finals. “It’s one of the best weeks of the year. I’m very happy. I’m hoping it gives me a lot of confidence for the next tournaments.”

“It’s amazing,” added Molteni. “I’m very happy. It’s the first week I have played with Horacio. It’s an incredible week.”

Molteni clinched his first ATP World Tour title in his second final. Zeballos, meanwhile, claimed his fifth career doubles crown and first on hard courts. He has won clay-court titles this season in Sao Paulo and Gstaad with Julio Peralta.

Molteni and Zeballos are the second all-Argentine team to win on the ATP World Tour this year, along with Marrakech winners Guillermo Duran and Maximo Gonzalez.

Brunstrom and Siljestrom earn 150 Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings points, splitting $17,560 in prize money. Brunstrom was bidding for his sixth tour-level title, while Siljestrom was making just his third appearance in a final, seeking his maiden crown.

Rio Olympics 2016: Serena & Venus Williams lose in doubles

Serena and Venus Williams lost for the first time in an Olympics doubles match as their hopes of winning a fourth successive title were surprisingly ended in the first round at Rio 2016.

The American top seeds lost 6-3 6-4 to Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova, who were only paired together at late notice.

Strycova replaced Karolina Pliskova, who withdrew because of Zika concerns.

It was the Williams’ first defeat in 16 Olympic matches playing together.

The sisters won gold together at Sydney 2000, Beijing 2008 and London 2012, but did not compete at Athens 2004 after Serena pulled out through injury.

“We played terrible and it showed in the results,” said 22-time Grand Slam singles title winner Serena.

Venus, 36, also lost in the singles on Saturday, with US women’s Olympic tennis coach Mary Joe Fernandez claiming the seven-time major champion had been sick before arriving in Brazil.

Serena, 34, can still become the first woman to win two Olympic singles titles after the defending champion beating Australia’s Daria Gavrilova earlier on Sunday.

But Venus, who won the individual title at Sydney 2000, saw her hopes of a fifth gold ended by Safarova and Strycova.

Neither of the unseeded Czech pair had won an Olympic doubles match, also losing their only previous outing together in a Fed Cup match last year.

“It was what it was,” Serena said. “We have a chance to compete for our country and did the best that we can. We had a blast out there.

“I wouldn’t say it was devastating. It was a lot of fun and we will always remember these moments and these matches.

“At the end of the day, I think that’s what matters most.”
